The Long Road to New Zealand

The Taxi Video

This was one of the more popular videos of the year… I wanted to reshare it in case you missed it! :)

Daily Photo – The Long Road to New Zealand

This is one of countless beautiful roads that crisscross New Zealand. I’m afraid I’ve forgotten exactly where I was when I took this photo! I know that is very lame, but I bet people around here can help me pinpoint the area.

As far as the camera settings, this is the kind of shot you can get with something called “compression,” a method where you use a zoom lens and zoom in quite far. It takes images in the distance and makes them larger than life.

Great tones and colors as always, but I love the composition the most.

Believe it is the road from Queenstown to Te Anau – just south of Kingston. Geo Tagged this photo at the time so it should be pretty close.

Wowee, fantastic photo, Trey!!! I saw it on facebook(posted by your Mom). It’s even better here as it’s larger. It will become my desktop background soon. Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone. :-)

I think Graeme is right… I recall seeing this road a few months ago, but don’t get down to Te Anau nearly often enough!

    Wonderful photograph, Trey!
I had a hilarious moment with your video: I had this experience countless of times during my long term stay in China. There are two ways to deal with this kind of experience: either the angry, annoyed way or the way you did. Congrats!

    And a Happy 2012!

No this is not Kingston. It is the other end of the South Island, on the road between Murchison and Saint Arnaud, Hwy 63. Nelson Lakes area. That is Lake Station Airfield on the left, where you can see the glider trailers. I’ll post a photo and geotag it.

Not quite as stunning as Trey’s great photo :-)

    Great photograph.

Thanks for the compression trip, I’ll keep that in mind when I next get the chance. Living in Bermuda there’s not much distance to zoom in on!

This is amazing. It looks like the clouds are rolling in over the mountains. Did you see any hobbits?

Beautiful landscape, bringing those majestic mountains up close with the zoom lens. One wonders where that road goes to get through the mountain range. Guess there was not a lot of traffic since you set up your tripod right in the middle of the road.

New Zealand does have the most gorgeous scenery. My parents rang in 2012 there. I went in 2007, can’t wait to go back.

Pam – you hit the nail on the head! It’s a very similar landscape to this end of the south island haha.

  • Pam Gore

Haha I just recognised it from my photos and the gliders clinched it :-)

Beautiful landscape! Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year!

This is such a cool shot. So many things to look at here.

I hope you enjoy your stay in beautiful New Zealand Trey. I’m from Te Anau originally, now living in Wellington. I’ve just returned from a visit home and was lucky enough to be flown over the Kepler Track (behind Lake Te Anau) by my gracious step father who is a helicopter pilot. It’s hard to believe this amazing national park is in their back yard. If you do make it to Te Anau look up http://www.thehollows.co.nz – it’s a luxury log cabin bed and breakfast set at the foot of Lake Te Anau, amazing place to set down and explore the area. You might get a special rate if you mention that their daughter sent you :)
