The Fireplace in the Tower of Terror

Lou, waiting to get on the Toy Story ride with us…

While at Disneyworld, I ended up meeting Lou Mongello, a very interesting guy that is Disney’s biggest hardcore fanboy! Note that I say that with the ultimate respect, because he has built his love of something into quite an empire! Now he runs WDWRadio.com, has podcasts/apps, and more!

Robert Scoble interviewed Lou while we were there together. Watch, and you’ll see all kinds of tips! Thanks again Keith Barrett for setting everything up.

Daily Photo – The Fireplace in the Tower of Terror

I’ve always wanted to get “behind the velvet rope” and take proper photos of this area, and it finally happened!

This lobby was richly decorated to look like an old, classic Hollywood hotel that has been left alone to slowly deteriorate. Although this angle in particular does not show the decay, future ones will… Also, a future one will include the full story of how I got behind the velvet rope — you won’t believe it!

Yo! When is the “RED Opening” video going to hit the scene?
I gotta see that bad boy.

I would like some feedback from the locals here on my latest pic over at 1138Studios.com
I don’t do a lot of B&W, but I really like the way this one looks.
But my wife hates it. So I need another opinion on it from y’all.
Check it out here —> http://500px.com/photo/1132284

Stunning texture here, it looks great! I’m also looking forward to seeing this RED camera of yours mate, certainly sounds like an amazing piece of kit! My latest shot is a rather interesting scene I encountered way to early one morning while on a 5 hour drive to christchurch: http://www.flickr.com/photos/edenbrackstone/5929714913/in/photostream
Gonzo, I like that pic mate… But I guess it’s down to individual taste!

This is sooo beautiful Trey – love the carpet and the walls look as if you can just reach out an touch them! Can’t wait to see the other shots from there – and of course, hear the story!!

I just love your indoor shots, great processing Trey! I was very happy I could join the hangout(it was my first) a moment ago! Google did a webcam + mic test and everything was working before I joined. :( I’ll try to fix it and join the next hangout sometime, I’m very excited about this Google+ hangout thing!
See my latest shot, I know you would love that place!

Love the details. You are so good at processing these HDR,s it makes me jealous. I have much to learn. Gonzo, I’m afraid I agree with your wife.

  • Andy Bird

Ooooh Disneyland – not long ’til I get myself along there now – seven or eight weeks or something! It’s going to be good :) Hopefully I can sneak myself some good shots while i’m there. I kind of sucked at photos last time I was there so I have to redeem myself – great work!

LOVE the rock textures on the wall, so much to look at here, my eyes are full. Beautiful.

  • http://www.thenightboat.com Pete Halewood

Loving this shot Trey! Definitely has a fanstasy/mystical feel about it but hey it’s Disney! I love the Tower of Terror, such a great ride but I still think that one at Alton Towers is better but I forget what it’s called….Oblivion! Now that’s a drop! Always liked runaway trains as well.

  • Patrick Ahles

Great processing on this one! All the details come out nicely.

Great shot Trey – the texture on the walls is surreal, nice warm glow to the room too… excellent!
That said, winter has finally arrived here in NZ – brrr! So, to warm myself up I uploaded something appropriate – enjoy… http://simonmorris.me/2011/07/13/drifting-along/

Awesome shot Trey! Colors and detail are amazing! Can’t wait to see the future shots as well. Speaking of classic Hollywood, any plans of coming back to Southern California for any shoots?

  • http://JimiJonesVisuals.com Jimi Jones

All of those patterns and textures makes this a real beauty. Love the tones and processing!

  • Patrick

    Hey Trey!
It must be so great to be able to go all those place were “mere mortals” normally can’t go.
But the pictures also turn out much better when one doesn’t have to clone out people, I guess!
Great texture detail in this one!

I noticed that you are using the sunsniper / blackrapid-strap for your second body.
Does that mean that you won’t be using it on a tripod or do you screw the strap connector on
and off when you choose to use the second body?
The fact that you cannot use such a strap together with quick release plates was the reason I haven’t bought one yet.

Also, do you have an Google+ invite for me? ;)

Way too cool, love the textures. It makes you feel like you are standing in the room, very nice! So have you tried out the Red Epic camera yet? How much difference is there in the photos, can’t wait to see one of your photos from it!

    Thanks everyone!

Vicki – just playing with it now….

Patrick – that strap is holding my 2nd camera…

Marke – yes a few more are coming! :)

    Johnny – Yes I misspoke there – it was a 1.4 I used! :)

Great shot, Trey. We have a family with 3 kids spending a couple of days with us, so I made this one my desktop background. They will head out to WA to see family there and then stop back here on their trip back to Camp Le Jeune in NC. They are both marines. Have a great Wednesday!! :-)

I love this image! Tower of Terror Lobby is one of the coolest things at WDW. I am dying to know how you got back there. Can’t wait to read that story.

  • Rachel

Beautiful! I will never look at that lobby the same way again. Nice photo.

  • Big Matty

That’s a supercool photo Trey. I’ve never been to WDW. But I used to live near DL and the Tower of Terror lobby there is pretty sweet too. I love how Disney makes so many things picture worthy.

Trey, it was great to meet you and spend some time wandering the parks. Thank you for sharing your amazing work. I’ve seen countless photos of Walt Disney World and yours are simply breathtaking! Brilliant!

  • Alastair

This is awesome. I was there two years ago and have some really poor P&S photos of that same spot, wish I had taken the time like you did even if it was my DSLR in front of the ropes.

The Cast Members working in the Walt Disney World Tower of Terror are awesome. If you’re there late, have nice looking gear (indicative of you being pro-level, at least) and not many people are around, they’ll often let you behind the velvet ropes. Nice work here. Hope you got some good access in the boiler room, too!

  • David Hendershot

Wow nice shot Trey. I still kick myself that I was on my way to shot fireworkers with Trey Ratcliff at the Magic kingdom and got stuck on the Ferry boat (Monorails were not running). BUMMER. Since my family met you they are going to stuck in cusotms everday to see your photos (They may be more patient with me know when I wnat to set up for a picture). The corener of TOT we met you will always now be called TREY’s spot.

Awesome pic Trey, I love the texture. Has this been double tone mapped? Can’t wait to hear the rest of the story either!

    Trey,

Really great photo. I love Disney! So much fun. Always amazing. Thanks for keeping us all inspired and sharing your gift with the world!

  • Patrick

Patrick – that strap is holding my 2nd camera…

    Yes, I realize that, Trey.
So you never use the second camera on the tripod but only for quick shots freehand?

  • http://kirantarun.com/lens Kiran @ KiranTarun.com

Nice shot! The hubby works just beside the Tower of Horrors ;D

  • http://www.livinranchodelux.blogspot.com Pam

That is so stunning. I am in awe of your work. You have made me love photography

  • Ivan Rojas

This awesome Trey. Your work really inspires me to continue learning and keep improving my photography. Looking forward to seeing more of your Disney series.

  • Dave Butler

    How many exposures?

Which software magic did you use?

    Another classic

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com Trey Ratcliff

    Thanks all!

    Dave – this was 5 exposures… :)

    Derek – no single-tone-mapped

  • http://scobleizer.com Robert Scoble

I was fortunate enough to have had a front-row seat as Trey worked on Saturday at DisneyWorld. Wow. His work inspires me to make and process better images. Inspiring.

  • http://RyanDury Ryan

The HDR really kills the mood in this photo, or at least, the mood I may have been able to see if it wasn’t over-processed. Not trying to be negative, I just think this isn’t the best setting for capturing the detail within 5 exposures.

  • Jeff

Looks like a scene where Dracula comes out of one of those two doors to meet his guests and asks if he can have them for dinner.
