Indian Family on Motorcycle

Places to Rent in South New Zealand?

I wanted to ask some of my Kiwi friends if they had a suggested website that listed rentals on the south island of New Zealand. I’m coming there with my family again for about a month. And we are probably going to get three different apartments (or homes) in three different cities for about a week or so each. Perhaps there is a trusted website where we can find some good properties?

Daily Photo – Indian Family on Motorcycle

When traveling around outside of the usual spots, I continually see entire families on motorcycles. This one is in India, but I’ve seen this all over southeast Asia as well… but don’t think I ever posted a photo!

The most I have ever seen is five people on a motorcycle from the same family. Usually two of the kids are crammed between the parents with the baby or smallest on the very front. The motorcycles are usually tiny and loud, darting in and out of traffic. These are usually very hard to photograph — I don’t dare use a flash or else I might make the dad crash the motorcycle! That would be a little too much… so I just crank up my ISO and hope for a good angle.

Hi there Trey. You could try Book a Bach: http://www.bookabach.co.nz/

  • casusan

Neat shot Trey – seeing these photos – know I am spoiled – even in a 10 yr old car! I would not want to go to work every day with a family on one of these!

    I second Book a Bach – a great resource.

Gotta love the cool guy in the background posing.

I third a Book A Batch. Being a kiwi, this site has some great spots.

  • Jared

I forth book-a-Bach. Good places, for good value, just read up the revies.

I fifth bookabach. Trey, you’ll have to get your Kiwi language skills going. In NZ, a holiday home is known as a bach (pronounced “batch”) in the North Island, and as a crib in the South Island. ;.)

Book a bach looks good. There is also http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/ which is part of Trade Me, NZ’s ebay (ebay never took off – TradeMe accounts for about 25% of all NZ internet traffic :) )

Trey, I agree with bookabach.com or also try http://www.holidayhomes.co.nz. We spent 4 weeks in New Zealand (3 in the south island). We did exactly what you’re planning (5-7 nights at a few different places). I can recommend some amazing places that we stayed in including this cottage in Te Anau (perfect for accessing Milford Sound), the views over the mountains were amazing:

Let me know if you need any more recommendations as all the places we stayed in were really nice.

Wow they would NEVER be allowed to get away with that here in the UK – other countries are way more exciting. This is a wonderful capture – definitely along the lines of what I would like to be doing in New York. Not only does this photo capture the people well but it captures the essence of the scene too – i love it!

Great capture, Trey. Nice to see the families getting around ok on motorcycles. Looks way to exciting to me ;-) . Thanks for sharing!!

“Wow they would NEVER be allowed to get away with that here in the UK – other countries are way more exciting”

No, the UK (where I am also) is just paranoid.

You should try Bali. 5 people: dad driving, mum on the back, and 3 kids of various sizes is very very common on a bike this big.

I would have recommended the two sites already mentioned.

If you want recommendations of places to stay, I’d suggest the west coast, probably Fox Glacier. Besides the glacier itself, there’s Lake Matheson and Gillespie Beach. The Haast area is really nice, you’d pass through Haast pass going from the West Coast to Queenstown. Queenstown is another obvious choice, and you can do day trips to Doubtful or Milford Sounds, Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook, Dunedin/Caitlins.

If you want more advise, you could try the forums here, where you’ll find member’s photos and you can ask for more advice, if needed.

    I’m a big fan of http://www.homeaway.com.

We use http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/ every year (we live in NZ) to book a week here or there. If you have kids its a great idea – lots of space to spread-out and cheaper than a motel/hotel. Check on bedding – most supply it.

Nice capture….Actually the vehicle you are referring to as “motorcycle” is known as “Scooter” in India. Scooters are far more prevalent in India, especially in families. Just thought I should clear this up

By the way, big fan of your site and photos

Trey, I have admired your work for a while now, however I am very disappointed in the photo of the Chinese policeman. There are very few legitimate reasons to take a photo on a severe tilt and this is not one. Sorry, just my opinion.

  • http://www.fluidr.com/photos/bush Marianne Bush

Love that new way of hiding your double (or triple) chins. I just might consider that look (ref the guy on the scooter). The ExTexan doesn’t seem to know about the shooting from the hip approach which is very effective when you’re not supposed to be shooting from anywhere ;-) . Well, it looks like “Stuck in Customs” is now “Stuck in China”. I’m sorry to hear that, Trey, but am sure you’re making the most of it. All the best wishes for a speedy escape.

I do not even know the way I stopped up here, but I believed this post was once great. I do not recognise who you are but definitely you are going to a well-known blogger should you are not already ;) Cheers!
