Even the Model of Shanghai is Huge

Look at this crazy place I found in Shanghai!

This was inside one of the many government buildings. It was a multi-story complex dedicated to the past, present, and future of Shanghai. It was filled with multimedia presentations on the water systems, photo exhibits of the Bund under British control, and video extrapolations of what the city would become in 2020.

Of all these cool things, the best was this gigantic model of Shanghai. I walked around it about five times, trying to get some kind of sense of how to photograph the dang thing. Then, finally, I decided to grab a shot that included a few tourists to show the scale of this monstrosity.

By the way, thanks so much for all the interest in the Newsletter yesterday! I put a map on that page showing where all the early subscribers are coming from. I was, frankly, surprised how many people signed up! Now the pressure is on to deliver something that is worthwhile!

    3

    Great(and realistic) model there.

Hope there wouldn’t be any mice there ;P

  • 4

Okay now that is the most impressive model! What a sight!

  • 5

How fortunate for you and us that you happened to find that exhibit, Trey!!!!! How amazing. Can you imagine the time and patience it took to build that huge city to scale!!! Great photo and adding the other tourists did lend prospective to the view. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful pictures with us. Gives us a chance to see parts of the world we wouldn’t otherwise :-)

Fantastic Trey – I don’t know if I’d ever have the patience to build this!

    great shot ;)

to be more specific: it’s the “Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall” at People’s Square. it’s quite impressing how fast this city changed in past and is changing. the latest mission of shanghai is “better city – better life” as 2010 china hosts the EXPO – unfortunately nowadays it’s the opposite, caused by the 24hrs/7days construction sites :-(

to get the Huangpo (= river through shanghai) that blue they have to work very hard ;)

yo this plan is insane dame !!!!!!!

    15

the question is… does this model itself have its own model inside of it… a model of the model?

  • James

    16

Now just add a thick layer of black smog…

  • 17

I wonder which building it is,so dizzy

  • leo

    18

wondering if its recursive, i.e. if the building that contains the model, in the model also contains the model.. now that would be much harder to do.. :)

  • Rod

    21

Yeah I know it’s not Japan but it would be so cool to have godzilla someplace in the middle of this.LOL

    Amazing model!!

  • 22

thanks all – yes I think this is an impressive model too… that’s funny zach… I bet if we look close, we can find a model of the same building inside this building.

Shouldn’t the water be brown for a more accurate representation?

There are similar models of modern and ancient Beijing at the Urban Planning Museum in Beijing just south of Tiananmen Square. Also saw smaller ones in Tianjin.

It is from Urban Planning Museum of Shanghai in People square. It is 100:1, and all the buildings are existing already. And it is only for the inner ring of the city. It means it is model for the downtown only.
Currently, there are more bridges and buildings than this model.
The river is not blue in the reality. But it is government’s dream and target. Having nice dream is not bad! :)
I am a woman living in Shanghai. I visited this building 3 times.

This shows how overpopulated this spec in the world map is and I just can’t get over it.

  • hari

    34

@James: you’d be surprised how little smog there actually is in the city. It tends to be foggy in the mornings, but it usually clears up fully by mid-day. (I live in Shanghai now.)

  • 35

The model is made of dominoes. Want to tip the first one?
    ;-)

    36

    where are all the starbucks?

  • 37

There’s one just like it in Beijing! I saw it last week. There seem to be huge models in just about every museum too,

  • guitarpick

    38

they need a way to model the pollution that will be floating around

  • 39

Wohaaa…. It is Huge !!!!! Great piece of Art !!!

  • 40

This is an Awesome ! Pic. Incredible buildings and architecture display. It makes me to plan a visit to Shanghai sometime :P ;)

  • 41

eh, so where’s the train? :-)
Totally awesome! Can’t even start to imagine the hours put in!
Oh to be eleven again with firecrackers! jk

  • Reika

    42

I can imagine that maybe a team of architects worked on this and worked on different sections each, but still, that’s a lot of hard work that finally paid off =D mind = blown!

Obviously photoshopped. I can tell because the pixels are all wrong. You can trust me on this because I am an expert. Please delete your fake post.

  • 44

    Thanks all.

Jarome… wrong. Make a big enough deal of it and I am happy to show more originals shot there. Trust me I’m an expert.

LOL @ Jerome…you sound very much like my class mate (who’s in Year 10) who says the photography I have with a blurry background is “photoshopped” given he couldn’t achieve the same results with his point-and-shoot…

I look forward to hearing your thoughts
