Another Smithsonian Winner, some upcoming appearances, and a new photo of Rockefeller center

Why are my blog titles getting so long? Sorry about that… I guess with one post per day, sometimes there is a lot to squeeze in!

So, a few days ago I received a letter from the Smithsonian saying that I have another one in the running for the 6th Annual Photo Contest!  Cool!  Two years ago, I had 2 winners in the 4th Annual Photo Contest , and one of those ended up hanging in the Smithsonian castle in DC.  I know a few of you out there got to see it on road trips – maybe we can make another pilgrimage this year!.  I didn’t win anything last year in the 5th annual contest…  It was a bad year for me, what can I say?

The one that is in the finalist pool this year is the Times Square one that I have placed below.  Just below that, I have placed a NEW photo of Rockefeller Center that I have been working on over the weekend.  I hope you like it.

I will be speaking in Austin, Texas next week at the Digital Photography SIG on Thursday night, Feb 26 (next week).  It’s free to come – please do – I’d be happy to meet you in person!  I’ll be talking about photography and going through a tutorial.  If you are in Central Texas, be sure to stop by — it should be a good time!

Also, over the weekend, I was interviewed at the Pro Photography Show, which is a podcast that should be made available in the next few weeks.  I will be sure to put a link to it here whenever it goes live.

Hey thanks. Stephen – I should make a video one day… I’m such a perfectionist about certain things – I would probably fret over the quality of it!

stunning picture and congrats to your nomination! Will there be a video available on the lecture you give at Digital Photography SIG? Unfortunately it is a bit far (and expensive) for me to come….

Hey, my fingers are crossed for you. Like the second posted shot quite a lot! It’s nice that you can clearly read the posted signs on the building.

Your new shot is fantastic – the sky is unreal! Actually, how long on average would you say you spend post-processing an image, it looks like you put your heart and soul into each and every one :)

Congratulations! Is there anything left you could wish for as a photographer? :-)
Chromatic aberration in the Rockefeller image seems a bit out of control :-/

    Thanks all!

Birgit, there is no official video planned of the talk… maybe something pirate will come out! :)

That’s great news. Always loved the times square shot. I think it was one of the first of yours I ever saw when I first came across your work. Interesting to see you are on Seim’s show; I unsubscribed because I was not a fan of the shows format when it came to interviewing folks, but I guess I will have to track your show down and see if that has changed.

Congratulations Trey! You deserve it! Alot of hard work! And Rockerfeller Center is simply awesome!!

  • Gail in Montana

Wow, what an honor, Trey, congratulations!!!! Hope your picture of Times Square wins!!! I was actually there in the 90′s when visiting my daughter and her girl friend. She was staying with her while working there in the summer. She worked in the World Trade Center during that time. Just doing temp jobs where ever they happened to occurr. Anyway, I got to spend a long weekend with them and saw A LOT while there. Your pictures sure do bring out the vastness of New York City. Great job once again. Best of luck in the contest. You know you will always be a winner in your fans eyes!!!!!

Hey thanks so much everyone… I feel like you guys are all part of the art… especially since I read and think about all your comments and re-incorporate them into future pieces – so thank you all!

Great news Trey…..aka, a rock star in the world of HDR. I love that lighting beam texture look you have going on. I have shamely tried unsuccessfully to duplicate that several times….and….well….lets just say that that’s a signature look of yours, and I guess its meant to stay that way!

  • http://www.seanwray.com Sean Wray

I love your HDR work. This one is great as usual.

  • Dale Martin

Beautiful as usual!!! Congrats on photo for the Smithsonian. Times Square is such a fun place to photograph. I got some of my best HDR shots there!!!

  • docgirlie

Sorry to bother you but I am a novice photographer. I am amazed at how you could get a full shot of the Rockefeller which I’ve been trying to do for ages. Is it the lens? Did you stitch? How low should I go to get the whole thing from ground to sky…it seems that you were lying down and yet looking up. I understand if you think this is a well guarded secret, but I don’t think I’ll be able to produce photos like yours, I just wanted to find out how I could get views of tall buildings like these. Thank you so much for your patience.

    Thanks!

Doc – well – it’s the wide-angle lens — hang out on the site here – look at the reviews, my equipment, tutorials, etc etc – might help a bit! No stitching needed.

There is a business book author named Stan Slap who wrote: When rewards come from an external source instead of an internal source, they’re unreliable. Anyways I think we can all learn from this knowledge on business to live better. http://www.slapcompany.com is his site if you wana check it out. I recommend it.
